Personality:
ben collins could seemingly be called "charming" and "attractive" on paper, but in person, it's a completely different story. despite his french background and culturally rich upbringing, ben is, well, slightly disappointing. most people would think he should be oozing with self-confidence and quick wit; instead, ben has the brains of a future geeky MIT student, and the grace of a newborn duck. he may be experienced in algorithms and theorems. he may be able to explain the theory of relativity. he may know newton's laws of physics by memory. but ben collins is definitely not experienced with the ladies.
because of his geeky charm, most girls call him "adorable" and "a good friend", which are two things ben does not like to be called. he doesn't want to be "adorable" as in, "oh my! look, that little puppy is adorable!" he doesn't want girls to call him "a good friend" when asked whether he's boyfriend material or not. he doesn't want girls smiling compassionately at his eloquence (or, lack thereof). he wants to "get the girl", so to speak; just like his father did.
speaking of his father, ben's constant moving and knowledge of foreign folklore has made him quite superstitious. especially during his stay at russia when he was twelve, ben was exposed to all kinds of tales about vampires and werewolves. to call ben a fanatic is putting it likely. he truly believes vampires and werewolves exist, and he's pretty sure forks is the perfect hideout for those kinds of creatures. which is why he's always on the lookout, despite his fathers rebukes on his "wild imagination".
his mind is pretty much always discussed among his parents. never has ben gotten less than straight As. it isn't even like ben tries very hard. he dislikes studying and reading textbooks. it just seems like his brain is a fast-acting, super-absorbing sponge. one would think he would be glad to be good in all his classes without even trying, but one would be dead wrong. ben thinks that if he wasn't so smart, girls might pay more attention to him. sure, he was fairly attractive and had the advantage of being foreign, but most girls. do not. like boys. who are into math and science. it's just an unofficial law of the world. ben's tried doing badly in school before, but failed because of his impulse to correct his mistakes.

History:
benjamin theodore collins was born in paris, france to franklin and margaret collins, a diplomatic couple hailing from providence, rhode island. ben spent the first eight years of his life in paris, which is why he considers himself french instead of american. his family proceeded to move to russia when ben was on the verge of his ninth birthday. there, he was exposed to all sorts of folklore and stories about ghosts, witches, and especially vampires, and people who turned into wolves during full moons. ben had always had an overactive imagination, and much to his parents' disapproval, formed a deep fascination for all things mythical.
ben spent six years in russia, learning all about the culture and the language, which he liked almost as well as the french. around this time, ben uncovered another fascination of his: math and science. ben could spend hours with his chemistry set, trying to see what would react with what. his mother indulged his fancy of mathematics by asking him to solve random complex problems on afternoon walks.
his parents' plan had been to instill in him a sense of value towards math and science to avoid him going on and on about stories of the vampires. pretty soon, ben's father grew tired of his life of diplomacy, and decided he was getting old and needed to go back to the states. ben's mother readily agreed, secretly wondering how in the world her son was going to stop acting like a child at the mention of the creatures in his books. ben thought returning to the states was a ridiculous idea. he had never been to the united states before, and didn't feel like growing accustomed to a new continent.
but his parents' votes outnumbered his, and the collins family made its way to new york city as soon as ben had the legal documents necessary to move back to the united states. new york proved to be dull, in ben's opinion (biased opinion, might i add). the bustling city and the overcrowded streets, and the lights of times square were of no fascination to him. he was ashamed to say he had acted like a three year old during the move, trying his best to punish his parents for making him move by speaking to them as little as possible.
margaret was the one who found forks, washington. she had informed her husband of a quaint little town which would be "perfect for ben's schooling. and it'd be an absolutely charming place to retire". so the collins parents dragged their once again fuming son all the way across the country. to everyone's surprise, forks was a lot to ben's liking. he liked the dull and cloudy weather, and their little house on a lane. he had never been one for socializing in school, but he liked fhs well enough. or so were the reasons he told his parents.
ben had acquired this strange fascination with forks upon arriving. he thought it to be the perfect place for vampires to dwell. really; little to no sun in a secluded town with lots of privacy. there had to be a certain catch to that. he suspected most people of being vampires. his next-door-neighbors. or the family on the street behind his. he was labeled as paranoid and odd, but ben, as usual was oblivious to all things having to do with his reputation. all he knew was that there were vampires roaming forks, and he wanted to be the only person let it on the little secret. now, it was just a matter of waiting. and proof.

being a nurse at malibu springs was not-- and never would be-- catherine kelly's medal of honor. when she had related to her friends back in manhattan that she had been recommended for a job at the notorious institute, her friends had gushed about all the rich people she'd be around; one of her friends had even laid out the prospect of her meeting some "dashing doctor that will sweep you off your feet".
cathy had started her second year at malibu springs, and the novel luxuries her acquaintances predicted had not once knocked on her door. so unrealistic were the latter notions, that they now seemed ridiculous to cathy, whom was now used to the fact that life in malibu springs had the capacity to be nothing but somber and sad on some days.
the center seemed bright enough on the pamphlets that could be found all over the nation. they portrayed m.s. as polished and refined, comfortable and leisurely. it had taken cathy no more than a week to figure out that things weren't as bright as they seemed.
of course, she had told herself. if people are still being sent here, then it must be good for something. so she turned a blind eye to the odd orders she was given, and to the strange routines the inmates followed.
cathy was currently carrying out one of the latter-mentioned "odd orders". she was to watch a certain patient; check up on her, and make sure she wasn't up to anything that could cause either disturbance or harm to anyone, including herself.
she had gone in to see the patient, cassadee, a couple times before. she had an odd room. the walls were painted black, and highlighter-enhanced words glowed on the walls. it was odd, but intriguing in a weird and twisted sort of way. but then again, cathy was all for out-of-the-norm, and she contented herself with not thinking ill of anyone-- their intentions, past, and taste included.
despite direct orders to watch cassadee like a hawk, cathy tried to give the former her privacy. really, it couldn't hurt right? and from what she had seen of cassadee, it seemed unlikely that she'd harm anyone or herself. sure, she was different; that much cathy could see by her room. but to her, there really was nothing to worry about.
cathy had stepped out of the room about twenty minutes before, once again leaving cassadee alone to do normal-people things, which cathy didn't really think required her supervision. during the lapse of her superintendency, cass hadn't done much, which was reasonable. if someone was looking in on cathy every couple or so minutes, she wouldn't have the drive to carry on her activities either.
really, sometimes the staff at malibu springs treated their patients as if they were in some kind of prison. so maybe they had unreasonable drug addictions and had the tolerances of irish dockworkers, but so were most people their age nowadays. cathy understood that their parents probably wanted to instill in them some sense of responsibility and self-reliance, but rehab? most of these kids didn't really need to be rehabilitated. all they needed was a reality check and some tough love; two things they didn't really get at malibu. and if they did, well, their hate for the institute made them forget it.
cathy looked at her watch and decided she should probably go back in and check on cassadee again. she didn't want to. she thought this whole ordeal was pretty stupid. cassadee wasn't a child. but orders were orders, and she didn't want to get fired. she fiddled with her necklace, which had been priorly hidden under her white oxford blouse. she fiddled with the black cotton sweater she had worn over it, trying to stall a couple of minutes more.
she really had no idea how to deal with cassadee. something about her trumped her. she had tried to start a conversation times before, but failed miserably. all she had accomplished was getting a couple of sentences out of the former; her reward was the feeling that she was utterly out of place in the black-painted room, with its inscriptions that shone depending on the lighting.
cathy knocked lightly on cassadee's door, not to ask for permission to enter, but to announce her presence. after knocking once, she took hold of the doorknob and pushed the door open, once again facing the black room.
"cassadee?" she called out. she wasn't really supposed to make her presence known. most nurses didn't. it was easier to catch the patients in the act that way. but really, the last thing cathy wanted to do was make enemies amongst the patients. "cassadee, it's catherine."[/color] golly, where is she? she mused. she couldn't have escaped, that was for sure. she had been standing right outside the door!
cathy sighed and sat on the edge of cassadee's bed, waiting for a response. cass was here, she knew it. maybe she just didn't feel like dealing with some nurse...
